Re: visualizing fields near charged objects



Here is the distribution of "charge densities" calculated
by JohnD in the first illustration. (decimals were truncated).
I assume these are densities in C/m^2. But what do these
numbers refer to? For example, does 43 refer to the surface
element above the dog's ear and 49 to the surface element
on which the back leg "is standing"?

I am asking about this because I am not certain that we can
make an inference about the situation in the third dimension
from the potential distribution in 2-dim. Only a full-blown
3 dimensional calculation can tell us how charges are
distributed over the dog's back, or below its belly.

I assume the "dog" is made from cubical bricks and that the
size in the direction perpendicular to the screen is only one
brick everywhere. But does this guarantee that what we
calculate in 2-dim is identical with what a real 3-dim
calculation would produce?
