Re: "Dr." and all that

From Black's Law Dictionary:

J.D. "Short for 'Juris Doctor' or 'Doctor of Jurisprudence.' This is
now the basic law degree, replacing the 'LL.B.' in the late 1960's."

LL.B, LL.M., and LL.D. "Abbreviations used to denote, respectively,
the three academic degrees in law, -- bachelor, master, and doctor of
laws; the latter commonly being an honorary degree."

Now, if by "doctorate" we mean the highest academic degree in a given
field (excluding honorary degrees such as LL.D.), then I agree with
Dr. Uretsky. ;) And, I also agree with Mr. and Ms. Smith, that
addressing a J.D. as "Doctor" is humorous. But, a doctor is a doctor,
of course, of course.

I guess when I do finally get my Ph.D., I'll have to try not to giggle
when appearing in court.
