This is very similar to what active engagement methodolgy does.
Unfortunately the average student can not just observe a physicist, and
pick up the trade. All of the PER curricula create situations where the
students must actively think about the material. One major stumbling block
to student achievement is that they must be challenged at the correct
level. Traditional teaching methods do not generally present the
challenges, or they present the challenges at the wrong level. One of the
wonderful things about the current research is that we can measure and
analyze student achievement to be able to find out what works, and what
does not.

In a sense active engagement curricula teach methodology by engaging
students in tasks that resemble what physicists actually do.
