The answer to that one ought to be obvious. So that they become
aware of the discipline and what it has to offer. Not everyone grows up
hearing about physics at his or her mother's knee.

Mark, I don't see the point. Look in any college catalogue: There are
hundreds of majors that most HS students are not aware of. Further, a
prime point of college general ed requirements is to encourage students to
think about what field they might be interested in.

Do you propose that it is society's responsibility to promote actively all
of the many possible majors -- just to be sure that they all get their fair
share. Or are you saying that it is in the self interest of physics
instructors to promote a physics major so that faculty jobs are protected.

Somebody please help me understand all this.
