Notice of Vacancy at WSU




Washington State University has a vacancy in the following position:

        Director of Undergraduate Laboratories will be available beginning Aug. 15, 2000. This is a permanent, Administrative/Professional position in the Department of Physics with responsibilities as follows:

(1)     Supervision of instruction in introductory laboratories for about 750 students per semester. Supervision of two Scientific Instructional      Technicians who have responsibilities in supporting the Laboratories and Lecture Demonstrations. Coordination of scheduling and grading of the laboratories and tutorials.        

(2)     Oversight of about 20 teaching assistants in laboratories and tutorial sessions. Instruction of Teaching Physics Laboratories (PHYS 598), a one-credit course intended to train teaching assistants in the goals of experiments and in effective methods to promote student learning.  The focus of these sessions will be in the goals of experiments, conceptual obstacles, operation of apparatus, student assessment, instruction in teaching methods for physics (including such things as constructivist methods, cooperative learning, peer instruction, and proper questioning), and in laboratory safety.

(3)     Development of laboratory experiences and tutorial sessions that foster learning and integrate well with the lectures. Upgrade the lower-division laboratory curriculum in conjunction with interested faculty members by designing new experiments and revising the laboratory manual. Supervise and train TA’s who run tutorial sessions or work as one-on-one tutors.
Salary will be negotiable and commensurate with experience and qualifications.
