Re: Waves

I don't know the answer to Brian Whatcott's question, but I want to
alert anyone on the list who might travel to Vancouver to a marvelous
unpublicized acoustic attraction which can be experienced here. Each
evening by local custom a cannon is fired from a position in Stanley
Park outside and across a stretch of water from the tall buildings of
the downtown center of Vancouver. If one is located in the vicinity
of the cannon when it is fired, the very load report is followed by a
fusilade of sharp, ringing echos. It is a phenomenon worth planning
into one's visit, at least if one is a nerd like me. I have thought
it would be a nice exercise to locate two or more tape recorders at
different positions about a hundred meters or so from the cannon
(called unimaginatively "the nine o'clock gun") and then to construct
a map of the buildings of Vancouver by analyzing the tapes. Imaging
sonar!

I also hope any phys-Ler who visits will look me up, too.
