Re: Wow,Phys-L wakes UP!

Dear Charley et al.,

It does seem like PHYS-L is in "summer mode", where the discussions range
bit more widely. However, the original issue did have some physics in it.

Over the past several months I have been commenting on my Irascible
Professor web page about the bonfire tragedy at Texas A&M, which probably
would not have happened had the administration there paid some attention to
basic physics and to basic safety rules (see
http://members.home.net/mshapiro2/comments-5-4-00.htm for a discussion of
the investigating commission's report and
http://members.home.net/mshapiro2/comments-6-23-00.htm for comments on
president Bowen's responses).

I now use the bonfire incident as a lead in to my discussion of equilibrium
in my introductory physics course. It seems to me that the McDonald's
incident would be a good intro to a discussion of heat capacity and heat
transfer (OK, OK I know I'm not supposed to use the "h" word on PHYS-L).

Enough already with the political/legal/moral/.... commentary! If I had
wanted this, I would have joined a political science listserve! What has
happened to the PHYS in PHYS-L?

At least one commentator has pointed out that the 'Welfare Rolls'
have been reduced only to the extent that our prison rolls have
INCREASED!!! The Prison 'Industry' in picking up where Welfare has
left off?
