The International Union of Pure and Applied Physics has recently published a book entitled Physics 2000, Physics as it enters a New Millennium. The book consists of brief reports from each of the IUPAP Commissions and Affiliated Commissions about major advances in its field in the last part of the century and predictions about how it is expected to develop and what it might achieve in the next decade or two. The authors were asked to write for readers who are not specialists in the field of their commission, including high school teachers. The strength of the collection is that each report is written by a recognized international expert in the field with a passion for his particular part of it. They show that the subject is very much alive and still full of intriguing surprises and fascinating promise
The book is now available for free downloading as a PDF file (464K) from the IUPAP web site at http://www.iupap.org/reports.html
