The easiest way to confirm length contraction is to measure the
magnetic force between two parallel wires. See Purcell's E+M
book, or http://physics.weber.edu/schroeder/mrr/mrr.html.

But I admit that this is still rather indirect. What you'd
really like is a photograph of a meter stick flying by at
half the speed of light, right? Dunno what the nearest
equivalent to that would be.

Perhaps you should just ask the students to calculate how high
Mt. Washington would have to be, according to someone riding
on the muon.
