Colleagues,
Since the Modeling Workshop Project and CPU Project are informed by PER,
I'm posting 2 lists of Modeling Workshops and CPU summer workshops for high
school teachers that have openings. These workshops are in many states.

I encourage you to forward the information for your state (or a neighboring
state) to physics and physical science teachers in your community. Or print
the info and ask your department secretary to mail it to teachers. If you
don't know their names, envelopes can be addressed to "physics teacher",
etc.

Many teachers tell me that the modeling workshops they participated in were
the best professional development experiences they'd ever had. I hear the
same thing from teachers who've been in CPU workshops.

In Arizona, where half the physics teachers in the state have participated
in modeling workshops, we are seeing results that are gratifying; not only
significantly improved student posttest FCI scores and better-prepared
college students, but also a team of a dozen or so teachers who've taken it
upon themselves to carry the modeling ideas down to the 8th and 9th grade
levels and develop a workshop to lead for physical science and algebra
teachers in their school districts. They want better-prepared students for
their physics courses, and they see this as a necessary step.

I hope that teachers in your community and region can have similar
opportunities, long-term.

Much work has gone into organizing each of these CPU and Modeling
Workshops. There is no assurance that they will be repeated next year, in
most cases, as most are funded by 1-year Eisenhower grants; so it's
important to encourage teachers to "grab this opportunity".

Besides, if you can persuade teachers in your region to participate, you
may reap benefits later by having better-prepared students, more
communication with high school teachers, and perhaps even a few high school
physics teachers who become interested in PER.

Below are details on the fourteen regional Modeling Workshops this summer
that still have openings. The workshops are for high school physics
teachers, and most are also for physical science teachers. Extensive
information about each workshop site is at

Modeling Instruction is a student-centered, structured inquiry approach
that organizes the course around a few models; this lends coherency to the
course.


For all modeling workshops except Wisconsin and South Dakota, a teacher can
receive financial support at the workshop only if he/she teaches in that
state. Out-of-state teachers are welcome at most sites.


REGIONAL MODELING WORKSHOPS THIS SUMMER:
The following sites have received Eisenhower or other funding to hold
regional modeling workshops. E-mail the contact person if you're
interested.


ARIZONA
Arizona State Univ, next to Phoenix (Sheila Ringhiser, Dawn Harman): July
12 - Aug. 4 (mechanics)

$500 stipend, tuition waiver for up to 4 semester hours.
Out of state physics teachers can attend free for no credit, or earn 1-3
semester hours @$110/hr. Housing and food are inexpensive, but a car is
needed. The workshop is at Sheila's high school.
Sheila's students get normalized gains on the Force Concept Inventory that
are triple those of students under traditional instruction, each year. She
has led two previous 4-week Modeling Workshops.


Arizona State Univ, next to Phoenix (Jeff Hengesbach): June 7-30

Northern AZ Univ in Flagstaff (David Thompson,Ted Lyons) (math & science):

For teams of high school math & science teachers. Learn part of the
modeling mechanics curriculum and then write lessons using the modeling
approach to teach these curves (log, exponential, trig, normal) using data
collected from biology, physics, chemistry and earth science.
MANY OPENINGS.
$600 stipend, travel, tuition waiver.
Out of state teachers can apply. Inexpensive tuition.
Convenient housing. In the mountains; cool climate.
Last year David Thompson was the NSTA "Teacher of the Year".

CALIFORNIA

FLORIDA

HAWAII
Univ of Hawaii, in Honolulu (Gheri Fouts & Consuelo Rogers): July 17 - 22

Administrative fee is only $77 for the course (2 sem hrs).
Gheri and Consuelo led a similar Modeling Workshop last summer.
On April 16, Agnes Fok said, "For PHYS 505, currrently we have 14 teachers
signing up and I think we are quite full. For out-of-state teachers, we
can send them housing forms to apply for dormitory housing, but we won't be
able to guarantee. Also we need to check whether the $77 administrative fee
will apply to non-resident or not."


MAINE

WISCONSIN

Most of the mechanics curriculum. A physics teacher can come with a math or
other science teacher from their school if they prefer.
Teachers from ALL STATES qualify for financial support, but Wisconsin and
Minnesota teachers have priority. Inexpensive meals, lovely rural area 40
miles from Minneapolis.
"Individuals from other parts of the US are welcome depending upon slots.
There will be 24 slots and we can stretch it a bit. ALL participants will
receive 3 grad credits tuition waiver (a $600 + value), housing costs
covered and a small stipend for meals and some travel and fees. We will
not be able to pay for airfares from across the US."
Michael Crofton's students' Force Concept Inventory normalized gains are
