Faculty position in Physics Education

Tenure Track Position in Physical Science Education

The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College
seeks an energetic individual with a strong commitment to
science education reform at all levels. The position is expected to be
filled at the Assistant/Associate Professor level, but exceptionally
qualified candidates will be considered at the Full Professor level as
well.

The position will be in the Physical Sciences department where
research programs are currently active in the field
of gravitational physics (UTB is an official member of the LIGO
Scientific collaboration), biophysics, geographical information systems
and computational quantum chemistry. The candidate must hold a Ph.D. in
Physics, Astronomy, Chemistry or Geology with at least
12 hours of graduate work in education, and have a significant record of
research in Physical Science (geology, chemistry and/or physics)
education.
Two years of postdoctoral experience in the field is preferred.
Familiarity with initiatives like the Teacher-Scientist
Alliance Institute of the American Physical Society is a plus.

The University and six (6) area school districts have received a
multimillion dollar GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and
Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) grant to develop new resources in
science and math education in the area.
The University is also interested in developing new courses in the
physical sciences for students in the education programs.
The successful candidate is expected to dedicate most of the time in the
next five years to curricular development
with area school districts and for pre-service teachers and to promote
GEAR UP goals and objectives. To this end teaching within the department
will be reduced to minimal. Successful performance in the collaboration
in terms of materials developed, training activities
with area teachers, scholarship in the area will be crucial for tenure
consideration.
The University of Texas at Brownsville is the youngest and fastest
growing component of The University of Texas
system. It offers a Bachelor of Arts in Physics and starting this Fall
will offer, pending approval from the Coordinating Board
of Higher Education of the State of Texas a Bachelor of Science in
Engineering Physics. It also offers a Master of Science in Physics
in collaboration with The University of Texas at El Paso.
Located in Brownsville, on the Gulf of Mexico (at 20 miles from
South Padre Island) its campus is a few blocks away
from the city of Matamoros, Mexico, just across the Rio Grande. Salary
is competitive with experience.
Consideration of applications will begin immediately, and will continue
until the position is filled. Applications
should include a curriculum vitae, a list of publications, a letter of
application describing research interests and teaching
philosophy and three letters of recommendation addressed to:
