SENATE REAUTHORIZATION BILL RELEASED
YOUR CALLS NEEDED NOW!!

Senate Education Committee to Vote on S. 2 On WEDNESDAY, March 1

As anticipated, Senator Jim Jeffords (R-VT) has released S. 2, the
Educational Opportunities Act, the Senate bill to reauthorize the Elementary
and Secondary Education Act. As written, the bill **does not** include the
targeted support for professional development for science and math teacher
professional development in Title II.

Also in S.2, (Title VI, Part G) is the Academic Achievement for All Act
(Straight A's). Previously a stand-alone bill, the Straight A's was
incorporated into S.2; Straight As is a super block grant which rolls
funding for three programs-Eisenhower State Grants, Goals 2000, and Class
Size Reduction-into one revenue stream. State governors may decide where to
use these funds for any educational activity permitted by state law if the
state meet specific student achievement goals.(This past Fall the U.S. House
of Representatives passed Straight A's as a 10-state pilot program.)

The Senate HELP Committee will be marking up (voting) on this bill starting
on Wednesday. Even if you have called, written, or emailed your Senator in
the past, now is the time to get on the phone to oppose this legislation
again. WE NEED TO RALLY SUPPORT IN OPPOSITION FOR THIS BILL OR THE MONEY FOR
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT COULD BE LOST.

THE MESSAGE: Ask your Senator to oppose S. 2, the Educational Opportunities
Act. S.2 eliminates the set aside for professional development for science
and math educators **and** it authorizes Straight A's, a massive block
grant.
