Folks, Leigh is quite right for his area of the world.

If one is siting on ice, do not let the air out; find some dirt or sand.

If you are on sand or snow, let the air out (if al else fails) so that the
pressure on the sand or snow decreases and you don't dig in further. Also
the contour of the tire changes to give more tread -- if you wish very hard.
