Indeed, if you believe Horowitz & Hill, the bipolar transistor's
collector current is determined by the base emitter *voltage*.

They cite the Ebers-Moll relation to support the transistor's function
as a transconductance device.

(It was a slightly modified Ebers-Moll expression which was displayed
earlier in this thread in describing the exponential behavior of the
semiconductor diode.)
