This is no doubt an extraordinary range of blade lives.
One could suppose there is a range of hair thickness
(suppose? this much is certain!)

Possibly there is a range of hair hardness.
There is undoubtedly a range of hair temperature,
moisture content and lubrication provided by shaving creams
of various kinds at the moment of shaving.

 I recall plaintive notes from women asking why they are
entreated to use face creams not soap, as being
'bad for the skin'.

 When they point out that men shave in a
form of soapy water every day and appear not to suffer,
they are (or used to be) reminded that shaving soap is loaded
with oil.
