Yes, but only when it is fairly close to the bottom. Instead of a
cage, imagine a huge plastic box with the plate suspended in the
center.
As the plate falls, a torus of rotating air develops around it. The
falling plate does not push on the bottom of the box until it is just

to collide.

But doesnt the compressed air under the box start a sound wave that
travels faster than the box falls??
