Yes. That's how I imagine it (when I sit down and work out the
implications)

By analogy, its sort of like throwing down balloons instead of bullets.
They move more and more slowly, and this delivers the "weight of the
plane" to the earth's surface, but this is not an "interaction" between
the plane and the earth, it is an interaction between the balloons, the
nearby air, and the earth. The plane has flown on long ago.
