Re: physics of sound texts

Try some of the physics of music texts instead. They have extensive
sections on sound, and the musical parts should also be of some
interest for nonmajors. I am not up on current texts, but I have
none that are really suitable for the student you suggest,
presumably innocent of mathematical ability. All the books I know
have graphs, and nonmathematical students don't understand graphs.
I let the students know that some mathematics will be required and
that selects the correct subset of nonmajors (and some majors as
well) for the physics of music course.

Among the texts you will want for yourself I highly recommend
"Music, Physics, and Engineering" by Harry F. Olson, Dover, $9.56
from Amazon. I have several other books (including reprints of old
classics like Jeans's "Science and Music") but Olson is the one
that gets used most. Another chestnut (which I lent to someone who
did not return it) is the two-volume Dover "Theory of Sound" by
Lord Rayleigh. Volume two (the one I used most) is available from
Amazon for $12.76. Volume one seems to be "backordered".

I, too, am very interested in texts for this course. I hope to
convince the university it is one of the courses needs offering
after I am compulsorily retired next year.
