I found NIH Image (free from the NIH web site) to be superb for image

I'd like to add my endorsement for this product. It's excellent. You can
get your copy at
http://rsb.info.nih.gov/nih-image/

In addition to NIH Image, Linux/Unix users will find a long list of image
and signal processing and visualization tools at
http://chpc06.ch.unito.it/linux/E/1/ In particular, TN-Image is a lot
like NIH Image (you actually get it from NIH although I'm not sure if
there's a definite connection between the two programs). More info about
TN-Image is at http://chpc06.ch.unito.it/linux/E/1/TNIMAGE.html
