Re: Interference pattern & jets

In watching the military jets take of on the nightly news I notice the
exhaust exhibits patterns of bright exhaust, dark lines, bright exhaust,
etc.

Is this in the "flames" at the exit of the engines? Or in the white
mist-contrail far behind the aircraft?

Similar patterns in the glowing blue exhaust of spacecraft are caused by
the supersonic speed of exiting gas: they are shockwaves made visible.

The patterns in the incandescent exhaust of military craft look similar,
so I suspect that they're also caused by shock waves. (Since commercial
airliners deliver mechanical energy via huge ducted fans rather than
high-velocity jet engine exhaust, there is no visibly incandescent gas and
no visible shockwaves in their engine outlets.)
