I am not a user of AOL or Compuserve, but it is my understanding that they
use modern mail software which is HTML-enabled. I'm pretty sure that all
providers to whom you pay $$$ will have up-to-date features and
capabilities.

You are most likely to encounter text-only mail limitations at (surprise!)
schools and government agencies. Juno does a great job, better than I
expected from a freebie; but it's not a full internet service and, as you
have discovered, it won't handle everything that comes along.
