Re: AP Physics Experiments List

I agree with Sam. We're talking about a limited number of experiments
likely to be helpful on the AP exam. So in addition to the four on
Tony's list, I would add Thomson and the three on Sam's list.

Brian,
Not to be mean, but I think some of these are a little too much
for the kids in AP Physics. I assume with Modern Physics that this is
the B exam so they have to memorize a ton already. I took the B in 1992
and didn't even know about 75% of those experiments.
I agree with you on Thomson and half-heartedly with Frank-Hertz
(complex equipment for HS students) and Davison-Germer (lattice
structure of crystal due to interference pattern of electrons passing
thru crystals - proof that matter is also a wave). For those and also
Becqueral, Roentgen, and Curie - I would suggest knowing only the
discoveries. Also, might want to remember Pauli (Exclusion principle)
and Bohr (model of atom - whoops, Pandora's box). I might also mention
Enrico Fermi (predicted neutrino and first fission reaction). Mine to
definitely include are:

Michelson-Morley - C is a constant in all frames and no aether in outer
space
Einstein - Photoelectric Effect - light is a particle
Young's Double Slit - Light is a wave

No more right now.

Tony,
What about:
Becqueral - investigation into x-rays leading to discovery of
radioactivity
Cuies - discovery of new elements
Thomson - measurment of e/m ratio
Hertz -discovery of radio waves
Geiger and Marsden - alpha particle scattering
Frank and Hertz - energy levels in an atom
Davisson and Germer - electron diffraction
Joule - paddle wheel (and temperature increase for water in a waterfall)
Josephson -barrier tunnelling:Josephson junction
Gabor - holography
Glaser - bubble chamber
Mossbauer -resonance absorption of gamma rays
Landau - work with liquid helium

I teach AP Physics at our school. I was trying to come with a list of
experiemtns for my studnets to study for the AP exam. I want them to
know who
did, what is demonstrated, how the calculations were done and the
physical
setup. Can you think of any experiments other than the one's below?

Cavindish -"G"
Millikin -elementary charge
Rutherford -Nucleus
Compton -x-ray scattering
