Re: Lost in (cyber) space ?

Daniel,

I still don't know what could cause all this. I doesn't seem
that my institution has changed anything, but the truth is I
haven't checked this, and some times the actually do change
something without informng us users first.

Any way, I've done what you told me and now I'm back. I'd even
say I have lost at most a few messages, if any: I finally got
my first reply to Karl Trappe.

Well, now I've safely safed your hints as well as the info
from the listserv. Next time something strange happens, I'll
be able to contact you without worrying the rest of the list.

Thanks a lot for your kind and quick response.

Best regards,
Miguel A. Santos

Miguel,

This happens periodically when institutions change their email handling
and redirect mail. LISTSERV knows you by your full email address which
it takes from your initial signup email when you join the list. It then
assume mail from that address only is legitimately you. Listserv will
also not let anyone else from another email address chenge your mail
settings or use your name, nor will listserv allow people who have not
registered as PHYS-L subscribers post to PHYS-L to cut down on SPAM. If
you post from another address than the one you subscribed from Listserv
stops your posting. If your Netscape mail address looks different, you
can't post from there -- consider resubscribing directly from Netscape.

This will happen shortly at NAU to me: our department intends to change
(semi-invisibly) all departmental email addresses from stuff like
macisaac@bohr.phy.nau.edu to Dan.MacIsaac@physics.nau.edu, and this change
will be fairly invisible to most people except when a program like LISTSERV
relies on an exact email address match to confirm identity. Luckily, this
only happens once every few years at most, and my name is hard to spell
(for western americans at least) so I mantain a catalogue of aliaii to
redirect email and I watch it fairly closely.

What I do in these cases (about 1/month) is I kick you off PHYS-L, freeing
your name. You then rejoin and all will work again, you will have all
control over your settings and you can post as well as read. So although
I now kick you off PHYS-L I want you to know we want you on the list and
we value your contributions, so please rejoin manually from your new address
as quickly as possible. Instructions on joining PHYS-L, setting the
various options and getting at the archives can all be found on the web at

http://purcell.phy.nau.edu/phys-l/

If you have problems, contact me directly via email at danmac@nau.edu

Sincerely

Dan M

PS -- before more people ask about archive updates to include all pre-NAU
archives, YES there is a tech who has promised me it will happen by end of Feb
(this month). Thanks for your patience.
