Re: battery leakage

I believe that this residue is the byproduct of discharge of the battery.
You will find this problem vastly worse when the batteries are more
discharged. This is especially a problem if you have forgotten to turn off
the electronics and the load has completely discharged the cell. I suspect
that leaving the battery for extended amounts of time is equivalent to a
slow but extended discharge, ie, that the chemistry does not hold its
charge indifinitely.

In some designs of electronics, the batteries are used in parallel to
provide added current. However, this allows the cells to "buck" each
other's voltage. If you think about this configuration, it is easy to see
why they would discharge quickly. Just consider two emf sources (of very
slightly different voltage and internal resistance) connected "parallel" to
each other. The higher voltage one would force current through the lower
voltage one, until the higher voltage one is eventually lower than the
other. This would swap back and forth until complete discharge takes
place. That is why many such devices admonish us to take the batteries out
when storing for extended time.

Can anyone explain to me why there is battery leakage after a prolong =
storage of an ordinary 1.5 V battery. By leakage I mean the greyish =
white powder that forms around the battery near the top (or bottom?). =
Is there more chance of leakage if the battery is left in the electronic =
equipment (Walkman, etc...)?
