Besides the original source (Rutherford), it is interesting to note
that Steven Hawking said something similar in the video version of
"A Brief History of Time" when discussing his decision to go into the
field of cosmology rather than subatomic/High Energy  physics.  Recall
this was when particles were being discovered at great speed with little
underlying theory explaining them (before the standard model).
