Asimov wrote a similar story.  In his, arithmetic has been reinvented
and a proposal is made to train spaceship pilots to navigate without
using computers.  The idea is not to install expensive computers in
spaceships that might be destroyed in war, thus saving resources.  The
story is quite funny.
