The problem, I think, lies in the center assumption. The existance of a
neutral molecule of NaCl has not been established. Even when the NaCl
is smashed into the finest powder it is still an ionic crystal. The 1:1
ratio is maintained in the solid form and due to the polar nature of
water, it will ionize into the Na+ and Cl- ions from any size crystal.
