a 'climacteric disquisition' is not a bad way of putting it:
the word 'climacteric' can mean not just critical but rather
'occurring at a period of life (45-60) at which vital force begins
to decline'.
Yep, he got THAT right! :-)
All the same, it's a reminder that it's a really bad idea to try out
poetic prose in this arena, and to describe such a reasonable
proposal too! ...that one's good students may become academic icons,
but one's best students may become iconoclasts of the received wisdom.
