here's a small suggestion about this problem:

Another list I subscribe to appends a one-line message to the end of EVERY
mailing which says, in effect, "sent to you from phys-l; to change/delete
subscribe send email to listproc@....."

If the email a frustrated user sends to the listproc is not intelligible, at
least it will yield a message about how to get help, and then the user can
unsubscribe easily.

This might (only might) stop the regular messages of "please remove me from
this group" sent to the whole group.
