Dear Alex,

It sounds like you, or the staff there, need a union. We had
problems with our University management like you describe and the only
solution, not the best that can be *imagined* maybe, is to unionize. The
guidelines you describe are going to make it very difficult to set up and
operate an effective physics teaching environment. Rules like you are
operating under are put in place by "bean counters" whose expertise is far
from the world of teaching. A union seems to be the only force that has a
chance to convey to management the expert knowledge of how to teach
students. This knowledge is held by us workers, both staff and faculty,
not administrators and accountants. What keeps this situation in place is
the fact that the decision makers, the latter above, are not accountable
for their decisions. A union will force some measure of accountability on
them.
