Now I may just be ignorant, and I know relativity overturned alot of
newtonian physics, but I have read Einstein, Fenyman, Hawkings, and others
and this is the first I've heard of the law of conservation of energy being
a local phenomenon!
Anyone care to take a stab at this?

Hi Merlin-
The principle of conservation of energy is not a "principle" at all.
It is a local observation based, in large part, on the definition of "energy".
There is no proof that conservation of the energy of the universe is a conserved
qquantity.
Your question is backward: where did you ever find a proof that the
"law of conservation of energy" is more than locally true?
