fluid mechanics question

I am currently discussing various topics in fluid mechanics with my =
introductory classes for non-science majors here in DC. One of the =
topics we've discussed is Bernoulli's Principle. Now I know this topic =
has been discussed on this list before, but I happen to have several =
students who are pilots in my class this semester and one of them asked =
me the following question:

"When introducing a square block in a steady airstream, why is the
airstream more unstable immediately after passing over the block as
compared to the initial impact of confronting it?"

I'm not sure that this question can be addressed via Bernoulli - and I =
thought maybe some of you might be able to offer some insight into this =
students' question. Thanks in advance.
