This is a question of considerable interest to designers of light aircraft.
The ubiquitous spring steel gear to be found on many Cessna light aircraft
was originated by Steve Wittman who designed some aircraft of his own.

I believe I have an examination of this design case in an aircraft design
manual which I will review for you when I have a moment available.
