I agree, but it may be worse than you state, as success does not depend on 
"manipulating equations" nor "require an aptitude for math".

While the high school physics experience should be more experience driven 
than math driven IMHO, it never-the-less shouldn't be divorced from its 
connections to math as mathematics is a major component of what lends 
precision to physics.

I'll climb down from my soap-box now.
