So the pendulum gets an effective "kick" only once during each period of
ITS oscillation (like manually pushing a swing);

Non, ce n'est-pas le cas. Il y'en a deux pousses per foix,
et chacun contient plusiers de petits coups, il me semble.

(Not quite - there are two pulses per period, each consisting of
multiple taps at 120 Hz, I believe....)
