Linux is a clone of the UNIX operating system. It was originally
designed for PCs. I learned some UNIX in college and have loved working
with it again. One of the great things is that the OS is *FREE*! You can
download it and try it yourself, although the best way to go is probably
to purchase one of the CD "distributions" from a vendor such as
Cheap*Bytes (http://www.cheapbytes.com). It's currently coexisting quite
happily on my computer with Win95.
I think the open nature of the system, the wide availability of free
software, the security features, and fun factor will make this a great
system for our science department's computer lab.
