Leigh asks:
What does Pais have to say?<
"Subtle is the Lord", Abraham Pais (all abbreviations are mine - WJL)
p. 21: Einstein undoubtedly knew of the M-M result, but ...
probably it played only an indirect role in the evolution =
of his thinking."
p.115 M is mentioned neither in the first nor in any of E's later =
research papers on SR.
p. 116 [Einstein wrote in a letter in 1950 that he had become =
aware of MM] "only after 1905." "the experiments that influenced =
him were the observations on stellar aberration and Fizeau's =
measurements on the speed of light in moving water."
p. 133 E knew "of the 1895 Lorenz paper in which the MM =
experiment is discussed at length."
Pais goes on & on on this issue. More?
