Re: The good old days

Don't throw out your slide rules. Show your children how to use them.
They are the greatest teaching aid I know for getting children to
understand logarithms and logarithmic scales on graphs. They are
fascinated that multiplication can be reduced to addition - once
they understand multiplication. I don't remember what age the boys
were when I taught them that, but they didn't get it in school for
years afterward.

A Castell-Faber salesman visited my office the year the hp-35 came
out. He left me a sample of their top-of-the-line slide rule, many
colors, terribly wide, lots of scales. He wanted me to use it and
recommend it to my students (I had the 500 student classes back
then). When I dfeclined to take it he said he'd be back the next
year to trade it for their next model. I accepted, reluctantly.

I scarcely used the slide rule. The salesman was never seen again.
I have a nice artifact (along with several other slide rules,
including a small circular I bought no more than six years ago at
the Caltech bookstore) to show my grandchildren when the time comes.
