If there is any one lesson that has impressed me in the
last decade, it is this:
We don't avoid student misconceptions by "telling the
student".
Whatever you tell the student on one day, when you ask
the student to disgorge the same message on the next day the
answer will be, "Huh?"
The challenge of teaching is to get a message to
the student that the student remembers. This is NOT ordinarily
done by "telling the student".
Communication, many teachers forget, is a two way process.
Effective communication requires a very high degree of redundancy,
coupled with much feedback.
Simulations can be effective only to the extent that the
student can explain, coherently and literately, the relationship
of the simulation to reality and the limitations of the simulation
(at minimum).
