International Physics Olympiad

To all high school physics teachers:

For over ten years, the AAPT has sponsored the U.S. Physics Team in
the International Physics Olympiad (IPHO). The success of this program
has exceeded even our own expectations.

The XXIX IPHO will be held July 2-10, 1998, in Reykjavik, Iceland. We
hope that you have one or more students who want to seek a position
on the 1998 U. S. Physics Team to compete against high school physics
students from more than 50 countries. All nominated students who take
the preliminary exam will receive a letter and a certificate recognizing
their achievements. We hope that you will nominate all of your better
students for the Team. We believe this sort of encouragement can be
very important in a student's life.

During the past several years, several major universities have asked for
a list of the semi-finalists. Since this offers an excellent opportunity for
good physics students to be considered for admission to these schools,
we will release such a list for students desiring this opportunity.

To obtain more information and an application, please send me an email
message at the AAPT office (301-209-3344).

Application Deadline: Friday, January 16, 1998.
