About the interdependence of the horizontal and vertical components
of the motion of a bullet: These two components of the velocity are
certainly not independent of each other in the case of an airplane.

(Airplanes don't usually have much spin either)

So if bullets have lift we need to explain it for a symmetric, spinning object.
