It seems that pdf files
cannot be edited, only viewed or printed page-wise.

Yes.

Does anyone know of a way to convert pdf to something editable and
then back to pdf for display? Any alternative approaches? (I tried
scanning, but the resulting gif files print slowly and badly, at
best.)

For a not inconsiderable sum, Adobe will sell you the complete pdf
creation and production package. If it is possible to work with a
pdf file as you wish, it would be only through their "distiller."
If you haven't yet, you might try using GhostScript (the latest
versions include some pdf capability) and see if it will let you
cycle pdf -> ps -> pdf. PostScript files are ASCII and at least
editable.

I find [in mathematics] a wonderful beauty. This is no science,
this is art, where equations fall away to elements like resolving
chords, and where always prevails a symmetry either explicit or
multiplex, but always of a crystalline serenity.
