re-magnetizing compasses

If you have a magnetizer, it can be used to remagnetize the compass. Orient
the magnetizer so that the "north" pole of the magnetizer is nearer to the
earth's geographic south pole. Put "keepers" in each opening and another
to join them, then place the compass on top. When the magnetizer is turned
on, the friction and inertia of the compass needle will keep it from
spinning and it will have its polarity reversed.
