Michael,
There is a crucial difference between the fields of an Electric
dipole and a Magnetic dipole (We speak here of two separated +/- charges
vs. separated N/P magnetic poles, apropos of your model). The "interior"
field of the electric dipole is antiparallel to the dipole moment vector;
the "interior" field of the magnetic dipole is paralell to the dipole
moment vector.

While we still dwell on this electric dipole moment topic, permit me the
dilettante pleasure of mentioning the proton spin precession
magnetometer - a device which is quite easy to build, and which
amplifies the audio signal at the precession frequency of the proton
while it relaxes to the geomagnetic field direction after an external coil
has provided a magnetizing force oriented east -west.
This device offers the rare capability of providing an absolute measure
of magnetic field strength via the audio frequency which is evoked for a
second or two.... All this from a little bottle of water.
