Of course there is a legitimate (non-sexist) explanation to the color code.
At least for most of the colors:

learn the colors of the rainbow!

     red    => 2
     orange => 3
     yellow => 4
     green  => 5
     blue   => 6
     violet => 7

Don't ask what happened to "indigo"
zero and one being black and brown you have to remember as well as
eight and nine being gray and white.
