According to The New York Times (3/4/97, page c5) the Union of Pure and
Applied Chemistry finally agreed upon the names of the following elements:
Z=104 rutherfordium, Rf after Ernest Rutherford
Z=105 dubnium, Db after Dubna, a town in Russia
Z=106 seaborgium, Sg after Glen Seaborg
Z=107 bohrium, Bh after Niels Bohr
Z=108 hassium, Hs after Hess, a province in Germany
Z=109 meitnerium, Mt after Lise Meitner
This is expected to be confirmed by the union's members next August. The
extremely short-lived elements 109, 110 and 112 (created last year) remain
unnamed. The previously proposed names for elements 105 (joliotium) and
108 (hahnium) were dropped from the list.
