In my opinion your first fear, stated in your first paragraph, is a greater
danger. It is a cultural flaw rather than an environmental hazard and it
should be recognized as such.

On that recent show about Bad Science, I caught their mention that PCBs
are terribly poisonous (or was it carcinogenic?) to mice. If true, then
the furor over PCBs might be an artifact of our use of animal testing.
Makes one think of that other nasty poison, penicillin. Poisonous only to
guinea pigs.
