Re: No more BASIC for MAC?

If you're learning a new language, learn Java. It is going to be the
language of the future.

--Bob Estes

Sure. That's what they said about PASCAL. ;^)

Seriously, there are many advantages to structured programing (JAVA in
particular since it promises to be platform independent). But FORTRAN is
faster for serious number crunching (see the last few issues of Computers
in Physics for an ongoing discussion of C++ compared to FORTRAN) and BASIC
is easier for simple hacking type projects. (Our computer science folks
here are quite happy teaching the first programing class in Visual Basic
because they can cover more examples and more topics in one semester. They
are switching to JAVA/C++ for upper level courses.) I was just being lazy -
I do intend to learn some JAVA eventually.

Thanks to all who pointed me to FutureBasic and TrueBasic and VIPBasic.
VIPBasic will let you download a test version (limited to 100 lines of
code) for free by the way.
