MICHIGAN TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY

CHAIR, DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION


Michigan Technological University invites applications for the position of
Chair for its Department of Education. Secondary education teaching
certification has been available for many years at Michigan Tech and by
reorganizing into a Department of Education, the University has made a
commitment to expand the teacher certification program. The new chair will
be expected to begin a vigorous student recruiting program and increase the
number of certificates awarded. This tenure-track position will be filled at
the Associate or Full Professor level. Salary is negotiable and dependent on
the successful candidate's qualifications. The search committee will review
applications as received and applications will be accepted until the
position is filled. Duties will begin no later than June 1, 1997.

The successful candidate is required to have an earned doctorate along with
a record of achievement commensurate with an appointment as an associate or
full professor; a demonstrated commitment to academic excellence, cultural
diversity and equal opportunity and demonstrated managerial ability in
higher education, including securing resources from external and internal
sources. Familiarity with NCATE requirements and program review procedures
is required as is experience in working with secondary school classroom
teachers and administrators of school districts. The candidate must be
prepared to coordinate the interdisciplinary interactions of the education
program.

Michigan Technological University is a publicly funded university located in
Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The university is composed of the College of
Engineering, the College of Sciences and Arts and the Schools of Business,
Forestry and Technology. There are 407 faculty in over 30 academic programs
with approximately 5700 undergraduate students and 700 graduate students..
Michigan Tech is one of Michigan's four research universities and is
included in U.S. News and World Report 'America's Best Colleges'; Money
Magazine Best Buys in College Education; and Peterson's Guide to Competitive
Colleges. A recent national survey of high school guidance counselors
conducted by Collegiate Information Services lists Michigan Tech as one of
top three colleges and universities in Michigan in providing the highest
quality education. Houghton, in which the university is located, is a city
of approximately 7000 inhabitants and was recently named #94 in The 100 Best
Small Towns in America.
