Dickinson College Summer Workshop

TEACHING INTRODUCTORY PHYSICS USING INTERACTIVE TEACHING METHODS AND
COMPUTERS

A two-week NSF-sponsored summer seminar entitled TEACHING INTRODUCTORY
PHYSICS USING INTERACTIVE TEACHING METHODS AND COMPUTERS will be offered
from June 15-27, 1997 at Dickinson College.

This program will accept 30 instructors from universities, four-year
colleges, and community colleges as well as 30 high school teachers.

The program will emphasize computer-enhanced interactive approaches to
introductory physics teaching drawing from the work of several related
projects including the WORKSHOP PHYSICS program developed at Dickinson
College, the award-winning TOOLS FOR SCIENTIFIC THINKING project developed
at Tufts University, the REALTIME PHYSICS program developed
collaboratively at the University of Oregon, Tufts University, and
Dickinson College, and the SPREADSHEET PHYSICS program developed at the
University of Maryland and Millersville University.

The first week of the seminar will be spent working on topics in
interactive physics teaching and the use of computers to support that
teaching. During the second week participants will be encouraged to work
on areas of special concern to them in adapting ideas to their own
environment.

Some topics to be covered include:
experiential learning cycles
guided inquiry techniques
reduction of misconceptions
collaborative peer-oriented learning environments
microcomputer and calculator-based laboratory tools
spreadsheet and graphical analysis
mathematical modeling and visualization
digital video analysis
interactive simulations

Participants who are accepted into the program will pay no tuition fees
and will have their room and board provided during the two-week period of
the seminar. Travel to and from Dickinson College will be the
responsibility of each participant. Interested high school teachers can
sign up for graduate credit by paying a fee to Millersville University.

Instructors for the seminar will be:

COLLEGE/UNIVERSITY DIVISION:
Priscilla Laws, Dickinson College
Ronald Thornton, Tufts University
Patrick Cooney, Millersville University

HIGH SCHOOL DIVISION:
David Sokoloff, University of Oregon
John Garrett, Sheldon High School, OR
Maxine Willis, Gettysburg High School, PA

In addition, there will be a number of common activities involving the
college instructors and high school teachers.
